Lesson activities

Step 1: All aboard, mateys!

2 minutes

Introduce the pirate adventure and teach children to respond to “Ahoy Mateys!” Encourage them to wave their hands and shout “Hooray!” together. Ask them to imagine they are about to climb aboard a pirate ship.

Step 2: Sail, search and find treasure

5 minutes

Play the Ahoy Mateys video. Encourage children to follow the actions in the lyrics: climb aboard, stomp their feet, steer an imaginary ship, dig for treasure, clap, hop and spin. Invite them to celebrate when the treasure is found. Adapt the movements to the children's abilities and provide enough space to move safely.

Step 3: Choose a treasure challenge

6 minutes

Choose one activity from the printable pack. Children can count gold coins or hidden parrots, match pirate actions to pictures, sequence the three story pictures, trace the ocean path, complete the treasure maze or count gems. Offer adult support with counting, pencil control and picture sequencing as needed.

Step 4: Treasure discovered!

2 minutes

Ask children to recall what the pirates did to find their treasure. Finish by waving, clapping and shouting “Hooray!” together. Invite children to share which movement or activity they enjoyed most.

Questions to ask

  • What do pirates say to greet their friends?
  • How can we steer an imaginary ship?
  • What did the pirates do to find their treasure?
  • Can you count the gold coins or hidden parrots?
  • Which picture shows what happened first, next and last?
  • What would you hope to find in a treasure chest?

Finish together

Children have taken part in a pirate-themed movement song, practising coordination, listening and imaginative play. A selected printable activity reinforces an additional skill, such as counting, matching, sequencing or fine motor control.
